Car Insurance Claims - Make Sure They Pay
There is always a lot of talk about insurance companies not fulfilling
claims after you have dutifully paid your premiums every month
without fail. There are various reasons why these insurance companies
do not pay - and we will outline them here. Of course some will
find any excuse to not pay - and the best advice we can give you
here is to read ALL the fine print in the contract.
1. Missing a premium
Even if you miss just one premium and don't make up for it in the
same month, or shortly thereafter, 99% of insurance companies
won't pay out - even though they continue accepting your premiums.
This is the most common reason for not being paid out.
2. Incorrect information
Supplying incorrect information for your quotation or your claim
is a death knell. This includes not notifying your insurance
company of a change of address. When filing a claim ensure that
you are 100% honest, as most insurance companies check your claim
against statements made to the police.
3. Be responsible
In case of car theft, ensure that you always alarm or imobilise
your car, as well as lock it. Most incurance companies will not
fulfill a claim where the owner has been negligent.
4. Drive responsibly
No insurance will pay out if a driver has had an accident whilst
driving under the influence of alcohol, has no driver's licence,
or is driving an unlicenced vehicle.
5. Your car is YOUR car
Ensure that you don't let anyone drive your car who is not in possession
of a valid driver's licence. If a family member or friend drives
your car, ensure that he or she is listed with your insurance
company. Some insurance companies allow multiple drivers without
notifying them, however most require notification (and perhaps
a small extra premium), so it is advisable to phone the company
and find out about this before allowing anyone else to drive
your car.
